NATIONAL TAIWAN UNIVERSITY Directives for Undergraduate Basic Subject Waivers

Article 1 The National Taiwan University (“the University”) Directives for Undergraduate Basic Subject Waivers (“the Directives”) are formulated to provide exceptional students at the University an opportunity to apply for waivers of basic subject requirements in order to fully utilize teaching resources and improve overall learning effectiveness.
Article 2 “Basic subjects” in the Directives shall include university-wide general core courses, Calculus, General Physics, General Chemistry, and General Biology. The course offering departments for the preceding subjects shall publish information on the criteria for waivers, required documents, and associated fees two months prior to the first day of instruction each semester.
Article 3 Students who fulfill the course waiver requirements may apply by submitting the relevant proofs to the Curriculum Division during the stipulated period. If the course offering departments have stricter requirements, those requirements shall prevail. The application form shall be formulated by the Office of Academic Affairs.
Article 4 Eligibility for waivers shall be determined by the course offering department through review or certification examinations. In the case of the latter, a preliminary written review may be conducted to determine students’ eligibility to take the examinations.
Article 5 Applications for a basic subject waiver shall be submitted within the announced period; late applications will not be accepted.
Article 6 Certification examinations, if adopted, shall be administered as written tests. The examination time and place shall be set by the Office of Academic Affairs.
Article 7 The course offering departments shall submit the results of the certification review to the Curriculum Division prior to the start of classes each semester. The results of certification examinations held by the Office of Academic Affairs shall be announced directly by the Office prior to the start of classes.
Article 8 For students taking a full-year course who fail the first semester of the course, whether or not they may apply for a waiver of the second semester shall be handled in accordance with the regulations of the course offering department.
Article 9 Course waivers and credits shall be issued for subjects that pass the review or certification examinations. Those credits shall be counted towards students’ graduation credit requirements.
Article 10 The Directives shall be passed by the Academic Affairs Meeting and then implemented in Academic Year 2014–15 (after August 1, 2014).

   (1) To allow students with required competence in basic subjects to seek waiver of a course and earn credits directly after passing the basic subject waiver examinations.
   (2) To enable students to utilize the time saved through course waivers, allowing them to take advanced courses or courses from general and liberal education.
   (3) To give students greater flexibility to reduce or extend their period of study and explore their specialization or double major options, thus enhancing learning diversity.

Implementation Summary:

   (1) Waiver examinations are offered mainly for basic courses in natural science, humanities and social sciences, which are largely required courses for freshmen.
   (2) In addition to the subjects announced by each academic program, more subjects eligible for waiver may be added in the future.
   (3) The waiver examination for each subject shall be held by the Office of Academic Affairs per semester.
   (4) The waiver for each subject shall be classified into various levels, such as General Physics (a), (b), or (c).
   (5) Each subject has its own syllabus, which forms the basis for examination scope and defining the difficulty level for each classification.
   (6) Credits for each subject are granted on a Pass/Fail basis, and thus may not be counted towards the semester GPA.
   (7) No preparatory course is required to register for the waiver examinations, but OCW online courses are available for each subject to assist students in independent learning.
   (8) A fee shall be charged for each examination, covering costs incurred from registration, venue utilities, and the design and review of the examinations.
   (9) The waiver examinations are scheduled to extend to the Second Northern Taiwan Teaching Resource Center. Credits obtained may be applicable to the participating universities.
